Competition of Amaranthus species with dry bean plants Scientia Agricola
Carvalho,Saul Jorge Pinto de; Christoffoleti,Pedro Jacob.
Weeds compete with field crops mainly for water, light and nutrients, and this competition is among other factors, a function of the occurrence of weed density, and the intrinsic competitive ability of each vegetal species. The objective of this research was to evaluate the competitive ability of five weed species of the Amaranthus L. genus (A. deflexus, A. hybridus, A. retroflexus, A. spinosus and A. viridis) with dry bean plants (Phaseolus vulgaris L. - 'Carioca Precoce' cultivar), using the replacement series design. A fixed total density equivalent to 80 plants m-2 was used in pots of 2.8 L capacity varying the proportions between the species in coexistence. To install the experiment, Amaranthus seedlings were transplanted to the pots at the...

Competitiveness of alexandergrass or Bengal dayflower with soybean Planta Daninha
Dias,A.C.R.; Carvalho,S.J.P.; Marcolini,L.W.; Melo,M.S.C.; Christoffoleti,P.J..
Weeds compete with field crops mainly for water, light and nutrients, and the degree of competition is affected by the weed density and the intrinsic competitive ability of each plant species in coexistence. The objective of this research was to compare the competitiveness of alexandergrass (Brachiaria plantaginea) or Bengal dayflower (Commelina benghalensis) in coexistence with soybean, cv. M-Soy 8045. A factorial experiment (2 x 5) with two weed species and five competition proportions was carried out in a completely randomized design with four replicates. Proportions were based on a replacement series competition design, always maintaining the total density of four plants per 10 L plastic pots, which corresponded to 60 plants m ². The weed-crop...

Complex bioclimatic and soil gradients shape leaf trait variation in Embothrium coccineum (Proteaceae) among austral forests in Patagonia RChHN
SOUTO,CINTIA P; PREMOLI,ANDREA C; REICH,PETER B.
Patterns of trait variation may be adaptive when vary in relation to an environmental gradient. In particular, leaf traits can affect productivity and competitive ability. We identify patterns of leaf size and shape variation with environmental heterogeneity in one of the most widespread tree species within temperate South America: Embothrium coccineum (Proteaceae). We collected leaf specimens and composite soil samples from 35 populations between 38° and 55° S latitude in Patagonia, covering a wide range of mean annual precipitation (MAP) and mean annual temperature (MAT). At each location, we measured nine morphological traits, some of which were cross correlated hence we focus on a smaller number of representative traits. We hypothesized that leaf area...

Effects of early and late season defoliation on photosynthesis, growth and yield of mustard (Brassica juncea L.) Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Khan,N.A.; Lone,P.M..
Mustard (Brassica juncea L.) is characterized by a large number of leaves in the lower layers. These leaves are poorly illuminated, remain below the light compensation point and abscise at maturity. The effects of removing 50 % of all leaves taken from the lower half of the plant at 40 (pre-flowering) or 60 (post-flowering) days after sowing (DAS) were studied on photosynthesis and growth at 80 DAS and on yield at harvest. A comparison of stomatal and mesophyll effects on photosynthesis upon removal of such leaves was also made. Defoliation at 40 DAS resulted in a higher rate of photosynthesis (P N), growth and yield compared to defoliation at 60 DAS or the no defoliation control. The non-significant variation in stomatal limitation (I S), increased...

Growth and development of honey weed based on days or thermal units Planta Daninha
Silva,A.P.P.; Marques,B.S.; Lima,R.S.O.; Machado,E.C.R.; Gonçalves,M.F.; Carvalho,S.J.P..
This work was carried out with the objective of evaluating the growth and development of honey weed (Leonurus sibiricus) based on days or thermal units (growing degree days). Thus, two independent trials were developed to quantify the phenological development and total dry mass accumulation in increasing or decreasing photoperiod conditions. Considering only one growing season, honey weed phenological development was perfectly fit to day scale or growing degree days, but with no equivalence between seasons, with the plants developing faster at increasing photoperiods, and flowering 100 days after seeding. Even day-time scale or thermal units were not able to estimate general honey weed phenology during the different seasons of the year. In any growing...

Plant growth and seed quality of bean seeds under soil waterlogging Sci. Agrar.Paran. / SAP
Pedó, Tiago; Martinazzo, Emanuela Garbin; Aisenberg, Geison Rodrigo; Aumonde, Tiago Zanata; Villela, Francisco Amaral; Antunes, Irajá Ferreira.
The growth of plant species can be affected by waterlogging. This process occurs as result of physiological changes that occur at the plants. The study aimed to comparatively evaluate the growth and expression of seed vigor of common bean genotypes subjected to soil waterlogging. For each of the genotypes IPR Tuiuiú and Carioca, treatments consisted of combining soil waterlogging for 12 hours or kept at field capacity, and plant sample collection times. Plant samples were collected at every 20 day intervals, being determined dry mass, leaf area and seed vigor. The plants of genotype IPR Tuiuiú showed higher growth and similar expression of seed vigor under soil field capacity. In plants of genotype Carioca, soil waterlogging did not affect growth and...

Size-mass relationships of Melanoides tuberculatus (Thiaridae: Gastropoda) in a eutrophic reservoir Rev. Bras. Zool.
Silva,Eduardo Carvalho; Molozzi,Joseline; Callisto,Marcos.
This study evaluated the relationships of certain allometric measurements in Melanoides tuberculatus Muller, 1774, in order to develop a statistical model to estimate the biomass of this mollusc species. We measured the total length and aperture of 70 shells. These measurements were correlated with the biomass values to construct exponential and power-function models, and both models showed high coefficients of determination. The exponential model was the better biomass predictor, with a coefficient of determination over 93%. These proposed models may be an effective tool to determine the biomass of M. tuberculatus in eutrophic Brazilian reservoirs.
